That\u2019s why in the month of April so much attention\nis being placed on preventive care and oral cancer screenings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the Oral Cancer Screening Process Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, the screening is carried out in the following two\nstages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Visual\nAssessment <\/strong>\u2013 The purpose of the visual assessment is for your dentist to use\nhis or her \u201cbird\u2019s eye view\u201d to assess your face, neck, lips and oral and nasal\ncavities to look for any swelling, bumps or white or red patches. <\/li><li><strong>Hands-on\nExamination <\/strong>\u2013 Then, to further search for any evidence of the disease, he\nor she will then manually probe the same areas for any signs of abnormal\ngrowths.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If any traces of oral cancer are discovered, further tests\ncan be conducted to verify the disease\u2019s presence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Early Detection is So Important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When oral cancer is identified and treated early, data shows\nthat the five-year survival rate is as high as 75%. However, the chances of recovery\nfall significantly when the cancerous cells are given more time to grow and\nspread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How You Can Prevent Oral Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to treat oral cancer is to never develop it. Given\nthat studies have proven that one of the main contributors to its development\nis bacteria growth, a simple strategy is to limit the microorganisms\u2019 food\nsupply and to remove them as frequently as possible using these methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Limit your consumption of foods and beverages that\nare high in sugar.<\/li><li>Perform oral hygiene, which includes brushing\nand flossing, at least two times a day.<\/li><li>Increase your water intake to aid in the\nflushing of bacteria from your mouth.<\/li><li>Visit your dentist for cleanings and\nexaminations at least semi-annually.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Protecting yourself from oral cancer requires adherence to\nsome small steps that will yield big results.
